A small but enthusiastic group of technical writers attended the recent reboot of a popular monthly gathering, the Tech Comm Café, formerly the Consultants and Independent Contractors group (CIC). On July 9 we met to snack, socialize, and, most importantly, discuss the technical communication scene in our area.

One of the first orders of business (if “business” includes enjoying refreshing iced beverages in the summer sunshine) was to refocus the group. The new name makes it clear that we’re not limited to contractors. We welcome technical communicators of all types—contractors, in-house, career changers, long-time tech writers, students, STC members, non-members, and anyone else who’s interested.

The Tech Comm Café provides networking opportunities, job leads, answers to work-related dilemmas, and the camaraderie that gives a burst of professional energy to keep you motivated.

To provide more value, we’re adding a little structure. An agenda and a moderator will keep the meetings on track and give everyone a chance to be heard, while allowing free discussion on topics of interest. The meetings are informal, held at a café that’s close to transit and free parking, so you can buy a snack or dinner to refuel while you chat.

Agenda for each meeting

  1. Introductions. Each person attending has 1 to 2 minutes to introduce themselves, their background, current activities, and reasons for attending.
  2. Job leads. Anyone who knows of a job opening or is looking for work can share that with the group.
  3. Idea party.” People present work-related questions or problems and others offer potential solutions.
  4. Network, network, network!

We hope to see you there next time! Check out the events page for more details.
