Victoria Tech Comm Cafe: next meeting September 19

The next Tech Comm Café in Victoria is on Wednesday, September 19, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Jenny Nelson will join us to share her recent experiences with managing a small team of remote employees, acting as team lead for a larger group of writers, and juggling a full slate of writing projects. Does she find a balance and some semblance of sanity? Come and find out!

Jenny has honed her technical writing craft for the past seventeen years and is currently a Principal Technical Writer and manager at Haemonetics Corporation, based in Boston, MA. Jenny credits her STC Alberta connections for landing her first job in the field and continues to be an active member of the Canada West Coast chapter in her newly adopted city of Victoria, BC.

Everyone is welcome. If you plan to attend, please RSVP on meetup.com.

Location

The Livet, 804 Broughton Street, Victoria BC

Agenda

  1. Introductions: Take 60 seconds to introduce yourself, your background, current activities. A good chance to try out that new elevator speech.
  2. Announcements: If you know of an interesting event or a job opening, or you’re looking for work, share it with the group.
  3. Speaker: The Challenges of Transitioning from Tech Writer to Manager
  4. Good Questions: Safely ask a nagging question and get a simple answer without judgement. A great opportunity for new writers to gain understanding.
  5. Wrap-up: Decide on a topic, date, and location for the next meeting.

The Tech Comm Café provides networking opportunities, job leads, answers to work-related dilemmas, and a burst of professional energy to keep you motivated. We welcome anyone who’s interested in technical communication — contractor, in-house, student, long-time tech writer, STC member, non-member, career-changer, or recruiter. We hope to see you there!

Andrew McFallon is a student and freelance technical writer with a background in marketing-communications. He’s about to complete SFU’s Technical Communications Certificate program. He also volunteers to coordinate STC events on Vancouver Island.
