• Breadth of experience. I have ample experience writing help systems, user guides, release notes, quick reference cards, online videos, troubleshooting content for support web sites, and instructional design and marketing content for a number of high-profile companies including Kodak, Boeing, FortisBC, and Teck Resources.
• Proven project management. I adeptly juggle multiple deliverables, I deliver when I say I will and I always strive to deliver content on or before a deadline.
• Expertise with technology. I’m experienced at writing in XML using Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA). I’m conversant with Adobe FrameMaker, RoboHelp, SharePoint 2010 and 2013, SAP, SAP business intelligence software, blogs, wikis, single-sourcing, writing for mobile, and writing SDK documentation.
My clients include banks, law firms, technology companies, educational institutions, architecture and engineering firms, and government ministries.
I’m a senior writer and editor, with more than 20 years experience creating a wide range of print, online and video documentation and training materials.
In a parallel career I’ve taught writing and communications at the post-secondary level since the mid-1990s, including courses at Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia, George Brown College, Guelph University/Humber College, and most recently, Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
I have been writing and producing technical documentation since 1993, when I supplemented a business degree with the Print Futures Professional Writing Program at Douglas College. I also completed an MA in transpersonal psychology at Naropa University. I am an incorporated consultant.
I enjoy making complex procedures and concepts easy to perform and understand. Finding the kernel that unlocks my own understanding so that I may communicate it to others is one of the joys of technical writing. I view the role of a technical writer as building bridges between people and technology. I have been working as an independent contractor and consultant since 1995, and appreciate the opportunities this mode of business affords for working with different groups of people and learning new procedures, products, and technologies.
Following two years of working in-house for Computer Associates, my clients have included Sysco Canada, ICBC, APEGBC, Vancity, Coast Capital Savings, Rockwell Automation, Rockwell Software, Dynapro Systems Inc., Chancery Software, Xinex Networks, Edge Training and Consulting, Wordsmiths International, and others.
I write and produce many types of documentation, including:
User and system administration manuals * wikis and content management systems * online help * web tutorials and web content * training and quick reference materials * standard operating procedures (SOPs) * white papers * newsletters * press releases * proposals * other marketing materials.
Always working as a member of the team, my role can vary depending on your needs. I have worked as project manager and documentation team lead, hiring and supervising others when necessary. I have also worked closely with development teams to help design graphical user interfaces and test usability. A brief stint in technical support really helped me see things from the point of view of the end user, and this perspective is something I bring to every documentation project.
